Ozone layer depletion

Occurs when chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) release chlorine that breaks down stratospheric ozone, which blocks harmful ultraviolet radiation. This creates the "ozone hole," more pronounced over Antarctica in winter due to chemical reactions in the polar vortex. In summer, the ozone hole temporarily recovers as chlorine converts to other compounds.
