➢ While the etiology and pathophysiology of the disease are not fully understood, the condition is considered to be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and immunological factors. ➢ This enteropathy is a cell-mediated, localized inflammatory reaction occurring in the intestinal tract upon provocation with ingested gluten. The inflammatory reaction results in a so-called 'flat lesion' in the gut. ➢ Celiac disease is an intestinal immune-mediated enteropathy precipitated by exposure to dietary gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. ➢ Celiac disease tends to cluster in families. However, the inheritance pattern is unknown ➢ When people who have celiac disease consume gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the fingerlike villi in the small intestine prevent absorption
