The two main subtypes are : Pyogenic (bacterial) Most hepatic abscesses (80%) Amebic. RISK FACTORS Pyogenic: Usually secondary to bacterial sepsis or biliary or portal vein infection. Can also occur from a perforated infected gallbladder, cholangitis, diverticulitis, liver cancer, or liver metastases. Amebic: Patients from Central America, homosexual men, institutionalized patients, and alcoholics.
