The National Assembly adopted a statement of revolutionary ideals, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. the document stated that “men are born and remain free and equal in rights.” These rights included “liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression.” This language emphasized the equality of all men, promoting the development of human rights. The Declaration also outlined civil rights in order to protect individuals’ freedom. The document guaranteed citizens equal justice, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. In keeping with these principles, revolutionary leaders adopted the expression “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” as their slogan.
