The drugs of first choice are carbamazepine (or oxcarbazepine) or lamotrigine or phenytoin. Alternatives include felbamate, phenolbarbital, topiramate, and valproic acid. Many of the newer anticonvulsants can be used adjunctively, including gabapentin and pregabalin, a structural congener.
