He used the term 'Hornhaultlinsen' or corneal lens. He noted that a steeper corneal radius needed a larger dioptric correction which he attributed to the lacrimal meniscus. He experienced and described the subjective and objective signs of corneal edema. And observed that tears had a metabolic function.
