Suggestive history and physical examination. Doppler ultrasound: Initial procedure of choice Ultrasound shows dilated portal vein, thrombosis of portal vein or hepatic veins, hepatoma . CT scan, MRI shows dilated venous collaterals, venous thrombosis, cirrhotic liver. Esophagogastroscopy for diagnosis of varices. Liver Biopsy may be required to confirm cirrhosis Tx: Sclerotherapy or banding of varices (by esophagogastroscopy). TIPS, Sengstaken-Blakemore tube placement, blood products as necessary. Medications: β-blockers, nitrates, vasopressin (during bleeding), octreotide (during bleeding)
