Removal of 70 of the normal liver can be performed with the expectation that the liver remnant will regenerate sufficiently for the patient to survive. only in patients with normal hepatic function regenerative capacity of the liver rapidly provides new functioning hepatocytes. Within 24 hours after partial hepatectomy, cell replication becomes active and continues until the original volume of hepatic tissue is restored. the process is essentially complete by 4-5 weeks
