➢ not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. ➢ consists of three major morphologic changes: cysts, fibrosis, and adenosis. ➢ the lesions contain single layers of epithelial cells = non prolif. ➢ simple cysts : most common nonproliferative breast lesion ➢ lined by a layer of luminal cells that often undergo apocrine metaplasia ➢ The apocrine secretions may calcify and be detected by mammography. When cysts rupture, chronic inflammation and fibrosis in response to the spilled debris may producepalpable nodularity of the breast (so-called “fibrocystic changes”)
