What are special considerations in transfusion?

Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), particularly those with lymphoma or other hematologic malignancies, require special considerations regarding transfusion therapy. Irradiated blood products are recommended for these patients to prevent graft rejection and minimize the risk of transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD). Irradiation effectively prevents the proliferation of donor T lymphocytes present in transfused blood products, reducing the likelihood of immune-mediated complications.
