What happens in the nutrient cycle?

Dead material and leaves fall into the soil and create the litter. This is then decomposed by microorganisms and the nutrients are stored by the soil. Plants then absorb the nutrients. The plants may be eaten by consumers, and when they die, the nutrients return to the soil.
