How is portal HTN assessed?

Using HVPG (hepatic venous pressure gradient) which is the difference between pressure of hepatic vein and inferior vena cava when pt is lying down. We get development of varices and ascites in case HVPF>10 mmHg, Variceal bleed if HVPG>12.
