Why might we feel pity towards Bob at the start of the novella?

Bob "tried to warm himself at the candle". We see Bob trying to deal with the rough situations scrooge puts him in. Instead of complaining he deals with it. We feel sad for how Bob is treated although he is so kind and generous.
