Caesaropapism is a term used to describe the political and religious system in which the ruler of a state also holds supreme authority over the church. This concept originated in the Byzantine Empire, where emperors claimed to be both secular and spiritual leaders. The idea of Caesaropapism was based on the belief that God had given rulers divine right to govern their subjects. As such, emperors saw themselves as responsible for both temporal and spiritual affairs. They appointed bishops and controlled church councils, often using religion as a tool to maintain political power.
