How are functions calculated with specific values?

A function would be calculated when given a specific value for example f(4) and an equation such as f(x)=3x + 2, by substituting 4 in the place of any x’s in the function, so for this equation f(x) = 3x + 2 is f(4) = 3x4 + 2 = 14
