Cytoplasm in animals cells has a low concentration of water and when animals cells are placed in water, a dilute solution, osmosis takes place: water moves from outside the cell to inside the cell which causes expansion and possible bursting While if animal cells are placed in a very concentrated solution water will move out of the cell and it will shrink
