How is data written into an optical device?

1)A laser is shone onto the surface of the disk, the surface is normally covered with a thin aluminium layer. 2) The laser burns pits into the Aluminium, the surface is then covered with pits and lands representing 1s and 0s ( data is written to a single spiral track)
