Question
Answer
- the prototype beta-adrenergic antagonist and blocks both beta-1 and beta-2 receptors with equal affinity - valuable in the treatment of angina pectoris, chronic heart failure and myocardial infarction (negative inotropic and chronotropic effect)
PROPRANOLOL
Therapeutic Uses PROPRANOLOL
• Hypertension • Angina Pectoris • Myocardial Infarction • Migraine • Hyperthyroidism
NON-SELECTIVE β ANTAGONISTS
• Nadolol • Timolol
used for chronic management of glaucoma because it can lower IOP (Betaxolol, carteolol can also be used for glaucoma)
Timolol
Selective β1 Antagonists
• Betaxolol • Bisoprolol • Esmolol • Atenolol • Acebutolol • Metoprolol • Nebivolol
CA: hypertension with impaired pulmonary function, 1st line therapy for chronic stable angina
Selective β1 Antagonists
Antagonists with Partial Agonist Activity – effective in treating hypertension with moderate bradycardia – should not be given to patients with angina and arrythmias
• Acebutolol • Pindolol
ALTERNATIVE TO METHYLDOPA for hypertensive pregnant women Antagonists of both α and β Adrenoceptors
Labetalol
BENEFICIAL for stable chronic heart failure Antagonists of both α and β Adrenoceptors
Carvedilol
Nonselective beta blockers with concurrent alpha 1 blocking ACTIONS:
Peripheral vasodilation, thereby reducing blood pressure
