Questions and Answers List
level questions: Level 1 of SOLUBILITY
Question
Answer
• It is the maximum amount of a solute needed to form a saturated solution at a specific temperature and specific solvent amount
Solubility
Solubility is referred to in three different terms
• Saturated • Unsaturated • Supersaturated
• The solute in solution is in equilibrium with the solid phase
Saturated solution
• The dissolved solute in a concetration below that necessary for complete saturation at a definite temperature • More solute dissolves
Unsaturated solution (subsaturated)
• Contains more of the dissolved solute than it would normally contain at a definite temperature, where the undissolved solute is present • Has tendency to crystallize and precipitate
Supersaturated solution
Solubility of compounds is dependent on:
• Physicochemical properties of the solute and solvent • Pressure • PH of the solution • Temperature • State of subdivision of solute (Particle size / Surface area)
• As temperature increase a. more solid can dissolve b. less solid can dissolve
a. more solid can dissolve
As you increase temperature, gas molecules do what?
• Increase Kinetic Energy
How to get gases to dissolve?
• Decrease temperature, and increase pressure
• Parts of solvent required for 1 part solute, according to USP Seven groups • Six groups according to EP
Solubility Expressions
• A good solvent for salts, sugars and similar compounds
Water
• Often the solvent for substances that are only slightly soluble in water
Mineral oil
Not everything dissolves in water True or False
• True
