Level 1 of Thermodynamics
level: Level 1 of Thermodynamics
Questions and Answers List
level questions: Level 1 of Thermodynamics
Question
Answer
It is a branch of physics concerned with heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work. The study of energy transformations.
Thermodynamics
Any property that can be produced from or converted into work Determines the fate of simple chemical processes to describing the very complex behavior of biologic cells.
Energy
- A well-defined part of the universe that one is interested in studying.
System
The rest of the universe and from which the observations are made.
Surroundings
Physical or virtual barriers that separate a system from the surrounding.
Boundaries
Types of Systems Used to Describe Thermodynamic Properties
Open System Closed System Isolated System
Both energy and matter can be exchanged with the surroundings
Open System
Mass is CONSTANT. Matter cannot be exchanged but heat can be with its surroundings.
Closed System
Neither energy nor matter can be exchanged w/ its surroundings.
Isolated System
States that if two thermodynamic systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third, then all three are in thermal equilibrium with each other.
Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics
First Law of Thermodynamics
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy is constant. cannot be destroyed or created
Second Law of Thermodynamics
Law of Entropy Entropy (Disorderliness)
Third Law of Thermodynamics
Law of Absolute Zero When a system has a temperature of 0 Kelvin, absolute zero (the lowest temperature), the entropy (energy that cannot be used to do work) is at zero never happens
is the quantitative measurement of randomness of the system.
Entropy
