Why can Photosynthesis be the Basis of All Life on Earth? | -Plants use the Suns, or another Source that gives out Light, to make Glucose
-This Glucose is used to Develop the Plant's Ability to Grow - adding onto the Biomass of the Organism
-Energy is then Stored in the Biomass, that is Consumed through the Food Chain [Primary Consumer then to Secondary Consumer...]
-So no Photosynthesis means no Biomass for the Primary Consumers to Feed on, which will Eventually Knock on to Us. |
State the Formula for Photosynthesis and What is Happening? | Carbon Dioxide + Water --[Light]--> Glucose + Oxygen
6CO² + 6H²O --> C6H12O6 + 6O²
-This is an Endothermic Reaction, so Energy is Taken From the Environment [Surroundings get Colder]
-Also, 2 Stages are seen. The First is the Light Energy Splits up the Water and Oxygen into Hydrogen + Oxygen Ions [Photolysis] and the Second Stage is Carbon Dioxide reacting with the Ions to make Glucose and Oxygen Gas. |
How can the Rate of Photosynthesis be Affected by? | -Light Intensity
-Concentration of Carbon Dioxide
-Temperature
-pH |
State a Practical that can be Used to See how the Rate of Photosynthesis can be Affected. | -Using Pondweed, to see how much Oxygen it makes in a Given Time is Excellent for finding out how Factors affect the Rate.
-Have the Pondweed submerged in Water, that's all in a Glass Thin Cylinder. Then have a Tube that will take the Oxygen made to a Gas Syringe. [Remember not ALL the Oxygen will be there - some will be for Respiration]
-Then, do the Experiment Normally with no Factors taking Place - to get a Base, Normal Result.
-Then change one of the Factors and Repeat the Experiment with the SAME TIME. |
Describe a Graph of Light Intensity against Rate of Photosynthesis and Explain why that is the Case. | -Light Level Increases will Increase the Rate of Photosynthesis Linear, until it won't and just stay at a Constant Rate
-Why? Because the Limiting Factor will be the Carbon Dioxide Level or the Temperature [or other Factors] |
What is the Formula for Light Intensity? | Light Intensity ∝ 1/distance² |
Describe and Explain a Graph of Rate of Photosynthesis against Concentration of Carbon Dioxide | -Carbon Dioxide is Needed for Photosynthesis
-And as the Level goes up, so does the Rate in a Linear Fashion
-However, it will Level and Stay at a Constant Rate
-This is due to the Limiting Factor most probably being the Temperature and so therefore Stopping the Rate of Photosynthesis going Faster and Faster. |
Describe and Explain a Graph of Rate of Photosynthesis against Temperature | -Enzymes are Involved in Photosynthesis so it has its Own Optimum Temperature
-Go to Low and the Graph will Illustrate that the Rate is Slow as well
-However, go Past the Optimum Temperature and you have made the Graph take a Sharp Drop due to the Enzyme Denaturing and being Useless. |
