Quality Control
level: Quality Control
Questions and Answers List
level questions: Quality Control
Question
Answer
- Widespread use of statistical quality control (SQC) where inferences are made about the quality of the population based on a sample - Principal sampling methods in SQC 1) Control charts (graphically tracks variables of interest over time) 2) Acceptance sampling (if sample passes, batch is accepted) - Customers are always external to the organisation - Company is organised by functional departments Inspection department is responsible for quality
Traditional View of Quality Control
Good management (objectives of TQM:) - Achieve customer satisfaction - Continuous improvement - Encouraging involvement of entire work force Good technology Traditional statistical tools combined with modern measurement and inspection technologies
Modern View of Quality Control
Total quality management - Quality is focused on customer satisfaction - Quality goals are driven by top management - Quality control is pervasive in the organisation - Quality must be built into the product, not just inspected afterwards - Continuous improvement
TQM
Random variations - Due to intrinsic variability - Within statistical control (< 3 stdev change in mean) e.g. human variation, variation in raw materials, machine vibrations Assignable variation - Indicates an exception from normal operating conditions - Out of statistical control (> 3 stdev change in mean) e.g. operator errors, defective raw materials, tool failures etc
Process variability
- Process capability (PC) - Process mean at nominal value with bilateral tolerances assumed (μ) - Standard deviation of process (σ) Assumptions - Output is normally distributed - Steady state operation - Process is in statistical control
PC eq
- Processing capability index (PCI) - Upper and lower design tolerance limits (UTL and LTL) - Process capability (6σ)
