Active Voice
These are word that are no longer commonly used, especially in modern writing. People sometimes fall into a trap of using these, thinking they sound more formal and professional
Archaic Expression and Old-Fashioned English
Words that used to be slang, but are now acceptable English. May be appropriate in spoken communication or in informal emails, but should not be used in formal communication
Colloquialism
Device whereby words are used to imply the opposite of what they normally mean. Similar to sarcasm, but sarcasm includes the intent to hurt the other party
Irony
The use of old words in a new form, or new words. Business communication is often full of them, as people have to come up with terms to describe new products and services. If you use them, make sure to add an explanation
Neologism
Refers to two terms that contradict each other but are grouped together
