Question
Answer
The production of genetically identical individuals without the fertilisation, from division of body cells in the parent.
Asexual Reproduction
The production of offspring by the fusion of a male and female gamete.
Sexual Reproduction
The scientific name of a sex cell. Eg Sperm, Ovum, Pollen
Gamete
A fertilised egg cell, formed by the fusion of a male gamete and a female gamete.
Zygote
A developing young organism, where cell division and differentiation are taking place rapidly. In plants, it develops in the seed. In humans, it is the stage between zygote and fetus.
Embryo
Name given to the developing baby in the uterus.
Fetus
The monthly cycle of events preparing the woman's uterus for the possible implantation of a fertilised egg.
Menstrual Cycle
The tube leading from the ovary to the uterus.
Oviduct
The release of an ovum from a follicle in an ovary.
Ovulation
A structure in the mammalian ovary that contains a single developing egg cell.
Follicle
Surrounds the fetus in the uterus, which protects the fetus from mechanical damage.
Amniotic Fluid
The male reproductive organ in animals that produces the male gametes.
Testis
A structure that contains immature egg cells.
Ovary
Female structure in a flower that contains one egg cell.
Ovule
The female structure in flowers which contains one or move ovaries and their stigmas and styles.
Carpel
The male structure in plants that contains the anther.
Stamen
The male part of the flower that produces pollen.
Anther
A male structure in plants that contains the male gamete.
Pollen Grain
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma and precedes fertilisation.
Pollination
The fusion of nuclei from a male and female gamete.
Fertilisation
The sequence of events taking place when the embryo in a seed begins to develop into a young plant.
Germination
The female structure in flowers where pollen grains attach in pollination.
Stigma
A structure that supports a stigma in a flower.
Style
The growth of a plant in response to a directional stimulus.
Tropism
The evaporation and diffusion of water vapour from the leaf via the stomata.
