Answer
Observing some phenomenon/behavior Formulating hypothesis and predictions Testing through empirical research Drawing conclusions Evaluating the theory
There are 5 steps in each scientific method
It is a broad idea or set of closely related ideas that attempts to explain observations
Theory
It is a tentative assumption about the behavior that is tested through research study.
Hypothesis
It is a specific expectation for the outcome of a study
Prediction
Gaining knowledge through the observation of events, the collection of data and logical reasoning.
empirical method
The one that the researcher can change
Independent variable
The one that the researcher wants to measure
Dependent variable
Descriptive research Correlational research Experimental research
Types of psychological research study
Observation of behavior (naturalistic and laboratory observations) surveys/questioners >interviews case studies: it is in depth look at a single individual
descriptive research
tells us about the relation between two variables.
Correlational research
It concerns establishing caused relationships(cause&effect) between variables
Experimental research
The participants in an experiment who receive the drug or other treatment under study
Experimental Group
DO NOT RECEIVE the drug or treatment
Control Group
The subset of the population chosen by the researcher for study/ the group of participants chosen for the study
Sample
The entire group about which the researcher wants to draw conclusions
Population
Cross-sectional, Longitudinal, and Sequential
Research designs
Researcher interviews a new sample of people each time. Separate age groups and are each tested at once.
Cross-sectional
The same individuals are tested repeatedly over time. 20,25,30,35,40,45
Longitudinal
Institutional Review Board
IRB
the degree of relation between two or variables is expressed as a numerical value called a correlational coefficient, which is represented by the letter r/ the value of correlation always falls between -1.00 and +1.00
Correlational coefficient
american psychological association
APA
Researcher must inform participants of any possible harm and have them sign it.
Informed Consent
A data collection tool used to gather information about individuals
