Question
Answer
Large neutral atoms, like argon or xenon gas, is ionized by a stream if electrons. The ions are directed at a column with neutral atoms of the same gas. The collisions cause the slow moving neutral atoms to act as fast moving atoms. This stream of fast moving atoms is then directed at the analyte.
FAB
An ion source (Electron beam) collides with gas phase molecules of an analyte
EI
A spray of solvent is directed into a vacuum. The droplets of solvent are desolvated using heat or collisions with dry gas until the non fragmented ions are liberated.
ESI
Sample is mixed with a solid matrix that absorbs laser radiation. The excited matrix causes the analyte to be expelled and then ionized in the gaseous phase
MALDI
an ionized reagent gas collides with the analyte to ionize the sample.
CI
Time of Flight Measured time taken for ions to travel a distance in a tube
