What's the definition of chemistry?
It's the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substance of which matter is composed, the investigation of their properties, the way in which they interact, combine, and change
What's the definition of matter?
It's something that takes up space and has a mass
What are the two types of properties and their definition
Physical properties- characteristic that can be observed with the five senses Chemical properties- indicates how a substance reacts with another substance
What are atoms?
They are the basic building blocks of matter
What are the three subatomic particles and their definitions?
Protons- found in the nucleus (central core) of an atom, has a positive charge Neutrons- found in the nucleus of an atom, are electrically neutral (no charge) Electrons- found in rings surrounding the nucleus called orbits/shells/energy levels, has a negative charge
What is a chemical symbol?
Its an abbreviation of the name of an element
What are the three categories of elements of the periodic table and were are their locations?
Metals (on the left of the staircase line), non metals (on the right of the staircase line and hydrogen) and metalloids (7 of them found along the staircase line)
What is an atomic number?
It is an element gives us the number of protons and electrons in an atom in that element
What is the name for rows and columns in the periodic table?
Rows- are called periods columns- are called group/families
Name all the categories on the periodic table
Actinides, halogens, noble gases, alkaline earth metals, alkali metals and lanthanides
What are the characteristics of metals?
Generally solid, hard and nonbrittle, good conductor of heat and electricity, ductile, malleable, melting points and boiling points are generally high and generally lustrous and can be polished.
What are the characteristics of nonmetals?
Found in all three stages, hard but brittle, bad conductors of heat and electricity, neither ductile nor malleable, melting points and boiling points are generally low, generally non-lustrous and cant be polished.
What are the characteristics of metalloids?
Typical metalloids have a metallic appearance, but they are brittle and only fair conductors of electricity. Chemically, they behave mostly as nonmetals.
What is the Bohr-Rutherford Diagram?
It graphically illustrates the chemical structure of the elements of the periodic table
What are elements?
Made up of atoms and cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances
